Manuka honey, a natural and healthy dietary supplement

Hey guys! Today I have another article for you in the health section: we will talk about what Manuka honey is and how we can include it in our diet for the benefit of health, beauty and better immunity.

I confess that I always have to have a jar of this honey at home. It stands in my kitchen cupboard as a remedy for all diseases. My grandmother has already taught me that there is nothing better for a cold than warm tea with honey, ginger and lemon. Manuka is even healthier than regular honey, especially since sometimes it is even hard for us to buy real honey of really good quality in stores.
Now it’s early spring and another pandemic wave, and the cold wind is really taking its toll on me. For some time now, I have felt that my immune system and my entire body were weakened, my immunity dropped, and I couldn’t cope with any infections.

So I opened my treasure, i.e. a jar of nectar honey bought on to take it every morning, one teaspoon, and not, as before, only on an ad hoc basis. This honey increases the body’s immunity and improves digestion. It also has a unique antibacterial effect, which makes the consumption of this honey a great effect on health. It is a truly valuable supplement for our body, and completely natural. If you want to learn more about its properties and application, please read the rest of this post.

What is Manuka Honey?

Honey was produced by bees imported from the Old Continent in the first decades after the arrival of Europeans, i.e. at the beginning of the 19th century. Initially, however, it did not attract much attention due to its specific and intense flavor. It was not until the 1930s that attention was paid to it, because it was noticed that the cattle that were fed it did not get sick.

There have been reports of the unique properties of the Leptospermum scoparium shrub for a long time. The native inhabitants of New Zealand – Maoris, and the first settlers used to chew the young shoots of the Manuka shrub and drink the drink from its seeds to cure dysentery and diarrhea. Leaves steamed in water helped soothe urinary tract discomfort and fever. In contrast, a decoction of the bark has been used to relieve constipation and colic, soothe swelling of the eyes and the effects of burns. It has also been used as a sedative and sleep aid.

Manuka honey is the subject of extensive scientific research into its extraordinary natural properties that set it apart from other honeys and make it so highly valued around the world. Its production requires special care and a lot of experience. Methylglyoxal (MGO) has been shown to be a naturally occurring compound that makes Manuka honey so special. MGO is formed in honey from nectar, and as the honey matures, the MGO content may increase.

What is MGO™ and UMF ??

These are honey certification methods. MGO in Manuka honey is information about the content of the valuable ingredient methylglyoxal in one kilogram of honey. Obviously, the higher this index, the better Manuka honey is. Whereas UMF, or Unique Manuka Factor, is a method of Manuka honey certification created by the UMFHA association. In our country, the most popular are honeys marked with MGO content.

How to choose the best honey?

Such Honey is not the cheapest product, but it is definitely worth the money. Therefore, if we decide to invest in our health and reach for this specificity, we should choose the right, good-quality product. It is best to choose one that has the most pro-health properties, i.e. above UMF 10 or with the highest possible number of MGOs. By choosing good-quality honey, you can be sure that you will receive a wholesome product.

Why is Manuka honey worth consuming?

Honey is a natural dietary supplement that contains many nutrients important for the functioning of our body. It contains, among others, fructose, amino acids, B vitamins, i.e. thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5) and B6. It is also very rich in minerals such as iron, zinc, potassium, calcium, copper, sodium, manganese and magnesium.

Manuka honey also strengthens the immune system . This high content of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants significantly reduces our immunity. In addition, it contains substances that activate the production of cytokines, proteins that protect against threats such as viruses, pathogens or diseases.

Manuka honey relieves colds, flu and coughs . Therefore, it is worth consuming not only in the season of increased morbidity, but also throughout the year to prevent infections. Just 1 teaspoon of honey a day is enough to improve our immunity. Honey is also a natural remedy for coughs, sore throats and colds.

It is certainly worth including it in our diet for many measurable benefits.
