Hi! Today I have another care post for you, this time we will talk about how to protect your hair on vacation: at the pool, in the heat, bathing at sea and on the beach.
Salty, cold water, often polluted, a long bath, then a quick rubbing with a towel and exposure of wet hair to strong sun and wind. It is not surprising that after the holidays they are not in the best condition. People who regularly use swimming pools also know about it – chlorinated water dries the hair amazingly, then a hot dryer, just to get back home somehow …
The more we should properly care for the protection of delicate hair. I had such a problem myself when I attended water aerobics classes, so I decided to write some useful advice on how to protect my hair in these difficult conditions. I invite you to the entry!
How to protect your hair in the pool? First of all, a shower cap
I know that it does not look beautiful in it, especially when you are still wearing plastic glasses to protect your eyes 🙂 And sometimes it is difficult to put luxuriant and long hair under it. (That’s why I invested myself in the Arena smart silicone swimming cap for long hair, which stretches well on the bob and does not fall off even with oily hair, the cost is only slightly higher than a good cap in a sports shop, and I can not imagine bothering with the usual, small, which just slides down).
Alternatively, if you are just splashing, you can tie a tight bun on top of your head and do not immerse yourself too much. Once on the lake I was so determined not to wet my hair with suspicious water and to lose the effects of previous two-hour treatments that I wrapped my head with … food foil and a net. Friends laughed a little, but so what, because a moment later I took off the foil, unrolled the coca and dissolved long, shiny curls.
Friends sat for the rest of the day with sad, dirty pods. Sometimes it is worth to spend a few minutes to have fun in the water and around the fire, without stress about destroying your hair: I always recommend wearing a shower cap.
How to protect your hair in the pool? Hair protection
If I know that soon I will drip in chlorine, at the last stage of washing I use strongly silicone or paraffin conditioner. These substances stick to the hair and protect it from loss and also substances from the outside. After bathing, I wash everything from my hair again. If you use natural care, it’s worth buying one paraffin conditioner for such special occasions or taking it with you on holiday anyway. A good option are cheap and easily available bottles from Ziaja, who likes packing paraffin and dimethicon for everything. Or a cheap, drugstore conditioner packed with heavy silicones and paraffin (e.g. Joanna mini for 3.50 PLN, tiny and handy, which will be enough for several uses).
It is best to look for products with these heavy silicones (you need to wash them afterwards with shampoos from the sls), for example:
- simethicone
- trimethicone
- trimethylsilylamodimethicone
- trimethylsiloxysilicate
- Dabur, Vatika, Conditioner for regenerating hair at night
- CeCe Med, a mask for dry hair with silk
- Lorys, Jaborandi, Conditioner for weak and brittle hair
- Ziaja, hair conditioner, intensive nutrition
- Joanna, Naturia Mini, Hair conditioner with strawberry
- Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Color Deep Treatment 3 Minute Conditioner For Dyed Hair
- Joanna, Argan Oil, Conditioner with argan oil
- Schwarzkopf Gliss Kur, Oil Nutritive, Express regenerative conditioner
Oils, cheese and silks
Even if we have hair secured with a conditioner and apply a shower cap, it is worth to additionally protect them with a little bit of oils, cosmetic kerosene or preferably: silicone serum. Silicones in oils have a slippery, greasy texture hard to wash shampoos, salt and chlorinated water, which covers the hair and effectively protects against the absorption of chlorinated water. In this case, I recommend two hair cheeses with very heavy silicones – Gliss chickens and Syoss serum. We rub a few drops just before bathing, especially on the dry ends of dyed or bleached hair.
What if we don’t have a cap on?
If we have forgotten the bathing cap and did not use any conditioner, such oil / hand cream / lotion or even a sunblock may be the only salvation available for our hair.
The final method if you don’t have anything else is to wet your head before swimming. Hair will first absorb tap water, so it will not absorb chlorine so much.
How to protect your hair? Shower immediately after leaving the water
After leaving the bath, immediately rinse your hair and body with clean water to wash the chlorine off them. Often there are special taps on the beaches and by the pools. Then it is good to rub the oil into your hair again. It’s best not to wash your hair at the pool, even if you take a quick shower. I always did so that I rinsed my hair, protected it with additional oil or conditioner and with wet under the cap, hidden under the cap, sneaked into the car. I rinsed the cap or turned it over. He was not visible from under the cap and hood, I was warm, I didn’t catch a cold. At home, I washed my hair thoroughly and moisturized it with an emollient-humectant mask. Thanks to this, they survived the whole pool season in good condition.
If someone can not get home quickly, it is good to wash the hair with a conditioner or shampoo with the addition of fruit vinegar. You can sew with a dryer just by the head, and the length of the hair is pressed gently into the towel.
How to protect your hair on the beach?
I took only a silicon paraffin conditioner on vacation (and let it build up a little, thanks to which it protected my hair better) and a moisturizing mask that will take care of it, I tried to protect my hair in a bun and under a hat, I only dissolved them for photos and sprayed products with filters. This significantly limited their destruction, they were still a little dry, but I think there is nothing to exaggerate – that’s why we grow long hair to enjoy and brag about, isn’t it? After the holidays they quickly returned to their good condition, so it was without a loss.
Chelating mask
Despite careful protection of the hair, from time to time it is worth getting a mask or a chelating lotion that pulls the build-up minerals from the hair (the simplest recipe – add a half teaspoon of vitamin C or citric acid to a portion of a silicon-free mask) or wash your hair with a shampoo that has acid salt EDTA high in composition – Tetrasodium EDTA, e.g. Johnsons Baby shampoos, Barwa, Eva Natura Style for PLN 3, some Timotei Pure, most of the cheapest, family ones – you need to check their composition on the back of the package). You can also use ready-made cosmetics designed specifically for swimmers, which neutralize the chlorine smell and prevent copper deposits, which is the cause of the green shade of hair after long bathing in the pool.
Between visits to the pool
It is also worth remembering that every day you should not abuse dryers and do not use cosmetics with drying alcohol (decanter alcohol, isoporopyl alcohol) because the hair after chlorine treatment is extremely delicate and susceptible to further damage, especially those previously damaged and bleached.

Once in a while, chlorine will not hurt us, but if you drip regularly, remember that you need to take special care under this direction to moisturize and nourish your hair, i.e. additional, proper care.
