L-cysteine hair rinse – how to use it for shiny hair?

Hey guys! Today I have prepared another post for you about natural methods of nourishing hair – L-cysteine hair rinse.

For as long as I can remember, it has been one of the most popular methods for shiny and thick hair, but today it has been a bit forgotten, replaced by cosmetics and new recipes for the use of intermediates. However, I think it is worth recalling! L-cysteine  is a very valuable amino acid, which is an ingredient used, inter alia, to produce creatine, positively affecting the appearance of our hair and nails. We can supplement it from the inside, and also use it in home-made cosmetics. You can buy this ingredient in online stores with cosmetic intermediates.

Rinse with the use of L-cysteine nourishes, regenerates and strengthens the hair, restores its shine and healthy look, reduces hair loss and frizz, and most importantly, brilliantly smoothes it and makes it look visually thicker, smoother and healthier. Unfortunately, it also has disadvantages, such as the need for tedious preparation, availability of ingredients, etc., but the worst of them is undoubtedly the sulfur smell that accompanies our rinse (some even smell rotten eggs). However, I think that for such effects, it is worth a while to be able to be quiet for a long time with really nice hair. So if you are curious how L-cysteine will work in the form of this simple mouth rinse, I invite you to the rest of the post.

What is L-cysteine?

Natural L-cysteine is a white, fine powder with a visible crystal structure and a characteristic smell. In the form of hydrochloride, it is obtained from duck feathers.
Cysteine is one of the twenty basic amino acids, belongs to the group of endogenous (man-made) amino acids. A characteristic feature of cysteine, which determines its unique properties, is the SH group (thiol – it is a sulfur amino acid). Two cysteines (also in the protein chain) can form a disulfide link (sulfide bridge), which significantly affects the tertiary structure of the protein and the biological activity of the protein.
Cysteine in cosmetics:

  • has a regenerating effect – participates in the processes of nourishing and cell renewal, due to its low molecular weight it is easily absorbed;
  • nourishes, regenerates and strengthens the hair, restores its shine and healthy appearance;
  • eliminates skin inflammation;
  • protects against the harmful effects of UV radiation;
  • it is a compound with antioxidant properties – cysteine itself catches oxygen free radicals and is also a raw material for the production of glutathione – a special protein that protects cells;
  • has a moisturizing effect.

L-cysteine mouthwash – how does it work?

My hair always looks great after such a rinse, just very healthy. They are smooth and loose, shiny, and they are also less frizzy – the hair cuticles are closed, like a rinse with vinegar and cold water.
They look thicker and stronger, flexible – the effect is somewhat comparable to fresh henning, so I don’t have to do anything with them for a few days. The condition of my hair after the rinse is maintained differently, depending on the rest of the care, usually from 2 weeks to a month.

L-cysteine rinse – how to use it on hair?

Use the rinse right after washing your hair and after rinsing off the conditioner. It is best not to pour it over your hair, but to soak it by putting your whole head in a bowl, dip your head and carefully pour and rinse the scalp with a smaller container – a cup, bowl, etc. Do not rinse.

If there is a shortage of supplies, the rinse can be made from a smaller amount of semi-finished products. However, I do not recommend omitting humectants here. Rinse can only be done with aloe and water, you can add pharmacy juice or aloe gel with a good composition.

Summarizing

There are a few recipes in the blogosphere for DIY L-cysteine hair rinse, but I found that prepared with this recipe always gave me a good hair day. Unfortunately, its smell is something that is not easy to get used to. So although the rinse is not difficult or time-consuming, and the L-cysteine itself is cheap, I use this product less and less often, probably only for big outings and summer trips, when I want my hair to look its best. Perhaps lavender, mint- or herbal teas as an addition to the mouthwash would help to suppress the smell. I think that it is worth trying this method for beautiful hair and start your adventure with this effective stinker!

Let me know if you take up the challenge of trying this rinse and how it worked for you!
