How to wash fruits and vegetables? | health from the kitchen

Hey guys! Today I have another article for you in the health section: we will talk about how to properly wash fruits and vegetables. We all like to use fresh and seasonal products, especially those from our own garden or bought at the market.

It would be best, of course, to buy tried and tested organic products. Few people, however, can afford them, and sometimes we turn to supermarket vegetables wrapped in foil, which are always of poor quality. Regardless of the place of purchase, however, we never fully know the origin of this food. Neither, of course, the gardening methods in which they were grown. Therefore, we must always be extremely careful, wash them when brought home and store them properly.

Remember that all sprays and artificial chemical fertilizers are harmful to health. However, it is not worth saving on healthy vegetables and fruits. I especially cannot imagine summer without strawberries, raspberries, cucumbers or tomatoes. After all, now we should eat as much of them as possible. However, remember to pay special attention to their proper cleaning. I invite you to the rest of my post, where I will write everything about how to properly wash fruits and vegetables.

Why do we wash fruit and vegetables?

The most important thing is to quickly remove any dirt, bacteria and microorganisms from them. After all, we do not know who collected them, how many people touched them in the store or at the market, and whether they wore gloves. Pesticides and other chemicals on the surface of the skins are also very dangerous. In industrial breeding, almost certainly all fruits have been sprayed against many diseases and pests. Only such methods of farming ultimately pay off on a large scale.

How to remove bacteria from the surface of vegetables and fruits?

Usually, washing food products consists in quickly rinsing them in lukewarm running water. However, we know very well that this is simply not enough. First, remove any visible dirt. The stalks should not be removed from berries such as strawberries and wild strawberries. However, raspberries and small berries should be washed just before consumption. A soft brush can be used to wash larger fruit with a harder skin, such as plums, apples or apricots.

In stores, we have recently a wide selection of ecological detergents and liquids for washing vegetables and fruits, but it is easy and much cheaper to make yourself a home-made, natural equivalent:

You can get rid of bacteria and any microorganisms from the surface of the fruit by rinsing them with water and vinegar , in a proportion of 1 liter of water to 3-4 tablespoons of wine vinegar.

How do I get rid of pesticides in vegetables and fruits?

In this regard, washing is a bit more complicated, as farmers sometimes use pesticides with a consistency of wax or oil, so you won’t get rid of them from the surface of vegetables and fruits with just plain water. However, they can be easily removed with an alkaline solution, e.g. water and soda. Baking soda is very cheap and it is always worth having a supply of it at home, especially since it works well for ecological cleaning.

For washing vegetables and fruits, use soda in the proportion: 1 heaped tablespoon of baking soda to 1 liter of water. The bath should last about 2-3 minutes. If our vegetables have been sprinkled, the water will turn yellow and cloudy.

Now all you have to do is rinse the vegetables and fruit under running water. Ready! We can eat them with pleasure.

Summary:

Wherever you buy summer fruit and vegetables, we never really know the origin of this food. Neither, of course, the gardening methods in which they were grown. Therefore, we must always be extremely careful. Remember that all sprays and artificial chemical fertilizers are harmful to health. However, it is not worth saving on healthy vegetables and fruits. However, remember to pay special attention to their proper cleaning. It is best to wash them when you bring them home and store them properly.
